An aphorism on prayer

‘Prayer is a gift God gives, not a duty God demands.’

Indeed, God wills to be entreated, and he gives that his will will be done freely, in love, in faith, in hope. Isn’t prayer essentially God’s own will making itself good from the side of the creature? As Forsyth once noted, God ‘wills to be inquired of’.

And in a word of not a little relevance to theologians, Forsyth proceeded to press that ‘It is not the questions that are intrusive. We are not called on to sacrifice our intellect, if only we do not idolise it’.
