The Scottish Baptist Theological Society…

…was launched last night. Andrew Rollinson has made this happen, for which we are very grateful. The intention is to meet three times each year, in Glasgow, Edinburgh, & ‘one other’ (I’m guessing it won’t be Kirkwall very often …), with the centrepiece of each meeting being a lecture from one of the members or an invited guest.

The Society is founded on four core values:

* A desire to explore Christian truth with integrity and honesty

*A commitment to having a particular focus on renewing Baptist identity in a Scottish context

*A freedom to debate, doubt and disagree without our unity in Christ ever being questioned

*A willingness wherever possible to attend, prepare for and contribute to each debate

I had the enormous honour of giving the first paper, and explored some aspects of a (British) Baptist doctrine of Scripture. In (many of) our seventeenth-century confessions, and in our current Declarations of Principle (both BUS and BUGB), the doctrine of Scripture is located under Christology. This struck me as interesting, and I tried to explore a little of what it might mean. It was good to see some old friends, and to meet some new ones. Driving through the middle of Glasgow at rush-hour in the snow was less good, but worth it for what followed.

But will they be serving haggis at every meeting?

Thanks for keeping everyone updated on this. This sounds very promising. Any chance that your paper will be posted online or see publication?

Hello Steve. It’s International Blog Comment Day – see – so I thought I would comment on your blog which I have never done before, only lurked in the shadows where the women stand and watch the gentlemen debate :::::that was a joke!:::::::

Would like to have made the meeting to have heard you; sorry not to have been able to do so as I had another meeting; do hope to make the next one.

Lynn (sort of related to your colleague “mwe”)

    Hi Jordan,
Thanks for this. I’ll send the paper to the Baptist Quarterly when it’s finished – in the meantime, they recorded it, so the BUS might be able to give you a copy (I’d offer you a script, but, ummm, I kind of busked the last few paragraphs…)

    Welcome, Lynn,

‘Sort of related’? Is this civil partnership, or adoption?!

Seriously, welcome, glad to hear from you, & perhaps we’ll meet one day…

St Andrews email addresses are done by initials…we presently have had three ‘mwe’s on staff, but, yes, I think I can choose between them…
